What is erectile dysfunction?
ED is the consistent inability of a man to get and/or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. It can result from any one of a wide variety of causes, some of which may interfere with the normal circulation of blood within the penis that is required to produce an erection.
What causes erectile dysfunction?
Experts believe that many ED cases may be due to both physical and psychological factors. High blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and certain medications are associated with a large number of ED cases. Other risk factors for ED include nerve damage, kidney or liver disease, other vascular conditions, cigarette smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption, which make it difficult for sufficient blood to flow into the vessels of the penis.
How can erectile dysfunction affect men?
The severity of ED ranges from mild to severe (complete loss of function). Men affected by ED can experience low self-esteem, performance anxiety, depressed moods, stress, guilt, and relationship conflicts. These sometimes can combine to compound the problem.
How do I know I have ED?
At various times in every man's life he can experience difficulty getting and/or maintaining an erection. If you think you might have ED, here are a few simple questions you can ask yourself to determine if you should talk to your doctor.
-
Are you usually able to get and/or keep an erection during sexual stimulation?
-
Is your erection hard enough to achieve penetration during intercourse on a regular basis?
-
Are you able to maintain a satisfactory erection through completion of intercourse?
If you answered No to any of these questions, talk to your doctor about ED and treatment options. Only your doctor can determine if you have ED and what treatment options may right for you. |
